Search for Spanish visas and you will find a dozen listed as though they were equally likely. In practice, a household moving from outside the EU is choosing between about five, and which one applies is decided almost entirely by where the money comes from.
Here is each route, what it asks for, and who it is actually built for.
If you work remotely for someone else
The Digital Nomad Visa is the one. It asks for a monthly income of about €2,849 for a single applicant, which is two hundred percent of the annual minimum wage divided across twelve months. The number people get wrong is what happens when you bring your household: add roughly €1,068 for the first person and €356 for each one after that. A family of four is therefore looking at about €4,629 a month, not €2,849.
That gap is the single most common misunderstanding we see. If you budgeted on the headline figure and you are moving with a partner and two children, check again before you resign.
If you are living off savings or a pension
The Non-Lucrative Visa is designed for exactly this, and the catch is in the name. You may not work. Not remotely, not for a foreign employer, not a little on the side. The income requirement is about €2,400 a month, with roughly €600 more for each family member.
If you are studying, or your adult child is
The Student Visa carries a lower financial floor, around €600 a month, and it now allows up to thirty hours of work a week alongside a higher education course. It is a genuine route rather than a consolation prize.
If a Spanish company is hiring you
The Work Visa runs through your employer, not through you. They have to show the role is hard to fill, which usually means it appears on the shortage occupation list. You are largely a passenger in that process.
If you hold an EU passport
Then none of this applies. You move, and you register once you are there. It is a much shorter list of errands, and if one parent holds an EU passport it is worth checking whether that changes the whole shape of your plan.
Settle this before anything else
School places, the flat and the bank account all hang off which visa you are applying for. Establishing the route in your first week of research rather than your fourth is the single largest time saving available, because most of what you read before that point turns out not to apply to you.
